Marty Plevel

After a four week trip to New Zealand in 2001 while riding on the back of a Harley, and attending The Art of the Motorcycle show in 2002 at the Las Vegas Guggenheim, my long standing fascination in capturing the art in man’s creations seemed to be validated. That was the beginning of my “Garage Series”. Growing up in Michigan probably had some early influence too.

There is the design, shape, color and reflection of what’s around. There is also power and the representation of freedom and independence. The ingenuity, creativeness and use of brain power to develop engines wrapped with form and function is intriguing to me. I like hard shiny surfaces juxtaposed with the things in nature, maybe it’s the yin and yang of it all. I think of most of my paintings as portraits, whether they are cars, people, or hand made things done by others. Capturing an essence while painting an artful representation gives me pleasure. I like to do it my way.

Unusual art venues for my work: the rest room signs at Torino Italian restaurants in Tucson and eight by ten foot enlargements of original vehicle watercolors hung on the exterior of buildings, 2015-2016 and 2016-2017, in Pontiac, MI in the juried Canvas Pontiac Art Show.
